Spook Me is back!

spook me
it's September and [personal profile] spook_me is back! If you want a minimal pressure, maximum options challenge, this is it.

The short version is that they send you you pick a supernatural element (it can be the villain, the protagonist, the McGuffin -- up to you) and two prompts. Or they'll pick a monster for you and send you three prompts. Then you write and send them a link shortly before Halloween. That's it. They love horror, but they're good with cheesy and silly, too. Any fandom, any rating, gen, slash, femmeslash, or het, any length. If you're not having fun, quit writing.

I love this challenge and have written some great stuff for it that I would never have done otherwise, so I pimp it every year. If you sign up, have fun and let me know you're playing? Sign-ups are over here. (spook_me is also on LJ if you prefer to participate over there.)

And now I've got to go write meme-fic.   Why does everything get long around me?    ::goes back to trying to write short::

Highlander, Haven, and my brain

Methos shadows
There I was last night, drifting off to sleep, when my brain decides to turn Haven and Highlander into a mashup.  Instead of Duncan, Methos, and the Jimmy, I had Nathan, Duke, and the Bronco, with Duke saying, "We didn't just kill one Trouble, we killed dozens. We killed hundreds.  And we're *good at it*."

Needless to say, I woke up gigging.  (And wrote it down to share it with the rest of y'all.)  My brain, ladies and gentlemen.  Make of it what you will.  Why not?  Characters do all the time!

no plot
I have a meme running over here.  I've reposted the rules below and I'm taking suggestions for 15* characters in 9 fandoms, everything from serious plot to pure silly crack.  So far I have mindbogglingly strange and 'oh my gods this is fun to write' perfect.  Please feel free to come throw your ideas in:  I'm taking suggestions through whenever I get online tomorrow, which will probably be about noon CDT (Greenwich - 6, I think).  Feel free to go silly, or toss tropes at me.  I had fun writing the 'sharing a bed' one, gods know.  See you guys tomorrow with new short fic!

* I have a list of 15.  But two of the 15 are sets, and I'm using one or both from the sets as I see fit, so it's actually 17.  Oops?

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.  (Be advised:  Because this is me, there are a few OCs in there.)

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"  Silly is perfectly fine.

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

I've made my list, so if you have a moment, now it's time for you all to ask questions!

ETA:  Please be advised:  Characters in icons are not necessarily showing up in this meme!  Sometimes, I just hit 'random icon' and run with it.

ETFA:  And closed!

A fun character meme, nicked from [personal profile] killabeez :

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Written for [personal profile] copperbadge 's tumblr Fanfic Prompt Turnaround, and because [personal profile] samjohnsson suggested Betty Ross, Jane Foster, or Clint Barton. Two out of three isn't bad, right?

Summary: Sometimes 'daddy's girl' isn't a description so much as a warning label.  (At the AO3 here.)

So, Latin, 2nd person POV, mostly.  A lot of my stuff is lyric wheels and/or older fandoms, so those might skew.   ::amused:: Oh, well.

December meme: crossovers!

crossovers
From [personal profile] springwoof : What makes a good crossover work? How do you know which characters would go well together?

Oh, man. Two very different questions, so, right, part one: What makes a good crossover work?Collapse )

How do you know which characters would go well together?Collapse )

Yes, I enjoy crossovers immensely, so any follow-up questions are welcome!

Ramirez
A while back I might have had Ramirez' body end up at the Royal Museum, Edinburgh. [archiveofourown.org profile] franavu wrote up some reactions to the events of that story.  Go, enjoy!

(Yup, I know, I'm behind and have two entries to write.  Oops.  I'll get on that this evening!)

Midwinter Gryphon
At this point I suspect everyone has seen the setup a bunch of times, but just in case: pick a day (or ask me to pick it for you), and give me something to talk about. It can be anything from fandom-related (specific characters, storylines, episodes, recs, etc. -- I think fic isn't supposed to be involved in this, but I'm also willing to consider comment-fic-type prompts, although no promises) to life-related to pizza preferences to whatever you want.

Answers may be brief or not, depending on the subject. Also, I reserve the right to decline prompts that I don't feel equipped to meet.

Feel free to give multiple topics (with dates) if you want; it's not limited to one per person.  And since I'm going to be two days late, I'll double up on a couple days.

December:

01: too late!
02: probably too late! unless someone wants something short, fast

31: Want to take a crack at making up a pantheon for a fictional polytheistic culture? ([personal profile] resonant )

Try to reply at DW if you can, but if not, no worries.  Meanwhile, back to some late/about to be late birthday fic.

Hermes running
From Cahill's Mysteries of the Middle Ages*, p. 21 of the hardback:

The human body, an iffy thing, easily undone, was yet the acme of the beauty of the cosmos.  No wonder that a male on the cusp of full manhood was the loveliest thing in the universe, repeatedly portrayed in statuary and fresco, "the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals," desirable by all, whether female or male (though completely possessable by none), whose hot blood beat against the walls of his body, seeking release, turning to white foam and spurting from his engorged penis--"a human Espresso machine," as Brown~ calls him.

Pardon me, I'll just be over here laughing helplessly.

* At this point, he's still talking about Alexandria and the Greek influence on the middle ages.
~ Brown seems to be Peter Brown; precise book unknown.

I love my coffee shop.

werewolf
I walked in with The Werewolf Book and a notepad to sort some things out for something I'm writing.  One of the baristas complimented my Halloween shirt.  Another barista nodded and said, "Oh, yeah, great book."  We talked about it for a few minutes and she took my email address so I won't miss as many local pagan events just because I refuse to be on Facebook.

Gotta love it.

Because I have learned a new word today and seen something wild: gryphomachie, or battle between human and gryphons. The picture of a gryphomachie is beneath the cut. Enjoy!

For the curious, the picture is from this article about ancient cartography. The article mostly seems to be an overview of an exhibit on display at New York University until Jan 5. Going back to writing now....

yeah right
To my vast amusement, Audrey refers to Agent Howard as having trained 'that genius who chases aliens.'  (This comment coutesy of me pimping Devo into the fandom; see s. 1 ep. 11, The Trial of Audrey Parker.)

Useful October reading!

October writing
What?  I can't be the only one who will find these useful in writing fic this month and/or next.  So, useful sets of laws, with randomly selected examples.  NB:  Do NOT eat or drink while reading these!  Particularly the last two.

First, Murphy's Laws of Combat: (Four links, to four differing lists; as many as 147 on one, and by theme on another.  Relatively serious.)
  • Professional soldiers are predictable; the world is full of dangerous amateurs.
  • It's not the one with your name on it; it's the one addressed "to whom it may concern" you've got to think about.
  • Field experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
The Evil Overlord Rules:  (Somewhat serious; you can probably put movie or show/episodes to a lot of these.)
  • Shooting is not too good for my enemies.
  • One of my advisers will be an average five-year-old child. Any flaws in my plan that he is able to spot will be corrected before implementation.
  • If an adviser says to me "My liege, he is but one man. What can one man possibly do?", I will reply "This." and kill the advisor.

Skippy's List (aka 213 Things Skippy Is No Longer Allowed To Do In The US Army):  (Terrifying.  I'm just saying.)
  • Not allowed to purchase anyone’s soul on government time.
  • Burn pits for classified material are not revel fires – therefore it is wrong to dance naked around them.
  • We do not “charge into battle, naked, like the Celts”..
And The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Efficient Mercenaries.  (There aren't 70 yet, but hey.)
  • If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.
  • A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head.
  • If you can see the whites of their eyes, somebody's done something wrong.

With many thanks to [personal profile] draconis , who set this off by sending me the Shlock Mercenary link.  Have a good time, keep all hands safely on the keyboard because I do NOT recommend eating or drinking while reading those.

I blame Dresden Files fic.

Duncan
Yes, that is the right icon.  I keep running into fic where Harry Dresden's been gender-swapped (usually by his, literally, faerie godmother), and my brain went, "I can see Cassandra doing that to Duncan.  I don't see him coping well with it."  Usually, at this point in the thought process, my brain adds, "Although I can definitely see Connor laughing at Duncan -- after he has a 'talk' with Cassandra."

I am not writing this, I am busy.  Do you hear me brain? ::flees back to original fic::

Sleepy Hollow snickering

pagan
I keep watching this and going, "I should document the Highlander shout-outs in this.' ::amused:: What?  That's where my brain goes when bodies roll off gurneys in the morgue!  Or we have flashbacks with swords and battles with inexplicable deaths and destruction.

What? Y'all have known for years I'm easily amused. Oh, well, back to origfic after this.  And sleep.  Damn, I'll be glad when I quit being constantly tired.

challenge
Okay, yup, you guys were right.  (Thank yous to [personal profile] raine  and Merewyn in particular.)  [personal profile] draconis ... is still in trouble for quoting Highlander the movie at me at one point.  There will probably be spoilers in the comments before this is over.

ETA:    I have to say, this show has some serious Highlander shout-outs in the first ep. I think I'm going to have to go see who's involved on the production side, because hoo boy!

Okay.  Back to writing.

I have no idea who to blame for this

inspiration
There I was, contemplating Marcus Constantine in the Opportunities-verse, when my brain shorted out, I think. My brain went Marvel/Highlander, and then to Highlander/Forever Knight because of that last crossover I wrote. Which, fine, no problem. I also remembered Dracula is in the Marvel-verse and that he's a different type of vampire.

This would be irrelevant to y'all if I hadn't clearly heard LaCroix's verdict of Dracula, which was, "Parvenu."

At which point I cracked up. ::amused:: Some things have to be shared, what can I say?

Yay! My favorite challenge is back!

spook me
[personal profile] spook_me  is gearing up again, early and for the eighth year.  This year, they're adding a new monster to the list of prompts:  Dragons!  (What?  Look at who I'm married to; do you expect anything but caps and exclamation points there?)  So, I'm already signed up.  I will point out to the rest of y'all that we're at X-Files 20th Anniversary year, that Highlander hits voting age this year, and well, come on, folks, Halloween stories about dragons (Night Vale?), men in black (MCU), shapeshifters (X-Files), dragons (Buffy, Teen Wolf), et al?  You get the idea.

This year, the prompts are going to be tarot cards.  You only have to use one card (you'll get two) or one monster of your choice (not even necessarily the original choice if you get a better idea) for it to count.

If you do want to sign up, go here.  It's a no pressure challenge:  no minimum or maximum length, almost two months to write, and per the rules of the challenge, if you're not having fun, it's time to stop writing.  Hope to see some of you there in a couple months!

"In the first place I don't understand where it begins and in the second place I'm not sure it has an ending and in the third place even if I understood the ending it wouldn't do me any good because I don't understand the beginning in the first place."
